Weekly Jersey Beats Brings Facebook to Life

Our Facebook page has upgraded with videos! Every Tuesday the Jersey Beats and Eats Facebook page is posting a video of what is a MUST to check out at some of our favorite Jersey Shore hot spots.

These short video clips include what pictures can’t such as an area view of some feel-good restaurants and beach front locations. Whether you’re dining oceanfront at Rooney’s or you’re having a family outing at the new Bradley Beach Miniature Golf Course, we will capture it all for you and help you plan your Friday night out.

Jersey Beats & Eats' “LIKE Your Locals” Contest Has Its First Winner!

Jersey Beats & Eats' social media page kicked off its "LIKE Your Locals" contest this past month with its first installment of the series, "LIKE Your Local Bartender".  Followers of the Facebook page voted for their favorite local drink-slinger in New Jersey and after hundreds of votes poured in, James Smith of The Mix Lounge in Long Branch was the winner and was awarded a $100 gift certificate to a restaurant of his choice (he decided upon the new Red Bank hot spot, "Char").

Jersey Beats & Eats met up with James this past week to find out a little bit about this local favorite drink master, and to sample some of his delicious innovative cocktails. JBE: What is your signature drink?
James: The "Coma" (Cosmo/Margarita combination) and the "Perfect Gentleman" (Old Fashion/Manhattan combo).

JBE: Mmm, can you tell us the ingredients in your famous "Perfect Gentleman"?

James: Muddled fruit, sweetener, VO whiskey, B&B cognac, a dash of Angostura bitters, maraschino cherry and an orange peel twist.
JBE: What sets your bar, The Mix Lounge in Long Branch, apart from other local Jersey bars?
James: It has gone from the hip joint to a local hangout, kind of like "Cheers," where everybody knows everyone's name.  And more recently we have opened up a new restaurant upstairs called the "2nd Floor."

JBE: When do you bartend at The Mix Lounge so that our readers can come and try one of your famous cocktails for themselves?
James: I work on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Monday is my favorite night with Happy Hour running all night. On Wednesdays we have "Locals Untapped", featuring singer/solo acoustic musicians and local beers on tap. Thursdays we feature the $7 Martini and a DJ.

JBE: Aside from The Mix Lounge, where are some places that you like to enjoy a good drink or a meal?
James: Bond Street Bar in Asbury Park and Tulipano's in Belmar.

LONG BRANCH:  Say hello to Chef Mitchell Shenker and goodbye to Chef Marc Marotta as chef/owner of Ciao Ristorante.  Classically trained New York Chef, Mitchell Shenker has purchased Ciao Ristorante, located at 75 Brighton Avenue, Long Branch, Monmouth County, New Jersey as reported by Richard R. Santore of Bielat Santore & Company, Allenhurst, New Jersey, the broker for the sale.
“After working in the food and wine industry for the last twenty years, I have fulfilled my lifelong dream of owning my own restaurant,” says Chef Shenker.  “Our mission at Ciao is to provide every customer with a unique and satisfying dining experience,” continues Shenker.
Ciao Ristorante is a warm, intimate, Italian themed restaurant and one of Long Branch’s favorite dining destinations.  Taking over from the originating chef/owner of Ciao Ristorante, Marc Marotta, Mr. Shenker seeks to continue the creativity of Marotta’s dishes and to add his own flair to the menu, including some of the most unique wine pairings found in any area restaurant.  Chef Mitchell Shenkers’ cuisine is inspired by his love and passion for food and wine.  The menu is transformed seasonally and utilizes local products where possible.
Mr. Shenker studied at the French Culinary Institute in the early nineties.  During his career he worked for such notable chefs as Eric Lagrange of Park Bistro and Marcus Samuelson of Aquavit.  He served tenure as the executive chef of New York University where he prepared dinners for such notable guests as President Bill Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, George Soros, Larry Tisch, Jaun Perez and many others.  Shenker has also earned his Certified Wine Professional Degree from the Culinary Institute of America and now brings his passion for food and wine pairing to Ciao Ristorante.
The restaurant seats 45 inside in a very intimate setting and can accommodate an additional 15 guests on its sidewalk cafĂ© during the fair weather months.  Ciao Ristorante is open six days a week; closed Mondays.  Chef Mitchell looks forward to your visit!

MATAWAN:  The long-time restaurant and banquet center known as the “Buttonwood Manor,” located directly on Highway 34 in Matawan, New Jersey, has been acquired by the MJ’s restaurant group according to Richard R. Santore of, Bielat Santore & Company, Allenhurst, New Jersey, the broker for the sale.
This will be the fourth MJ’s location opened by proprietors Angelo DiCapua and Robert Webster in the past four years.  Their first restaurant opened in 2009 and is located at the intersection of Route 537 and Sycamore Avenue in Tinton Falls, New Jersey.  MJ’s #2, opened in 2010 and is situated directly on Highway 35 in Middletown, New Jersey.  MJ’s #3 opened in 2011 on Highway 66, Neptune, New Jersey.  All three restaurants have been well-received and are enormously successful.
The new Matawan facility will be the flagship of the MJ’s concept to date.  It adds two additional profit centers not found in the existing three MJ’s locations; (i) a 5,000 square foot lake front deck that will be equipped with a tiki-bar and used for outdoor dining, cocktails and entertainment; (ii) a 200 seat banquet room to be utilized for weddings, sports banquets, private parties, corporate functions and other catering affairs.
MJ’s restaurants specialize in standard American fare but with an attention to taste and quality.  MJ’s uses only the finest ingredients for all of their appetizers, entrees, sandwiches, salads and pizza.  Their pizza is the best in the area; thin or traditional crust!  Mouth-watering chef's specials and drink specials are featured daily, along with live entertainment 4-5 nights a week.  MJ’s happy hour is the best in the area, every Monday - Friday at the bar.

Executive Chef, Nicholas Kouvel has been put in charge of all of the food preparation and presentation at all four restaurants.  Mr. Kouvel was the former owner of the infamous Cypress Restaurant in Ocean Township, New Jersey for several years, as well as more recently, the Executive Chef at Sally T’s Restaurant in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey for over ten years.

Following extensive renovations, MJ’s Matawan will be open for lunch, dinner, late night activity and private affairs, spring 2013.

EASTAMPTON:  Since 1972, Charley’s Other Brother, located at 1383 Monmouth Road, Eastampton Township, New Jersey has served the residents of Burlington County with fine food and drink, establishing itself as one of the most popular dining destinations in the area.  According to Richard R. Santore of, Bielat Santore & Company, Allenhurst, New Jersey, the broker for the sale, the restaurant was sold just prior to year-end 2012.  But no worries, the new proprietors are planning to continue to build upon the long-standing reputation of Charley’s Other Brother by maintaining the first class food and service the restaurant is known for.
At one period of time the 84 year old former owner of Charley’s Other Brother, Merrill Zinder, owned and operated five restaurants.  In addition to Charley’s Other Brother, there were Charley’s Brother, Hopewell, New Jersey, Charley’s Uncle, East Brunswick, New Jersey, Good Time Charley’s, Kingston, New Jersey and Hannah’s, Eatontown, New Jersey.  Charley’s Other Brother was the last standing and the last sold.  “Charley’s Other Brother was always my favorite restaurant, that’s why I held on to it so long.  But now it’s time to retire.  I am really sorry to see it go,” states Zinder.
Charley's Other Brother is committed to serving delicious food at affordable prices in a comfortable neighborhood atmosphere and is positioned as a full-service, family neighborhood restaurant, noted for its outstanding steaks, prime rib, fresh seafood, fresh preparations and excellent value.  All soups and sauces are prepared from scratch daily. The service is friendly and managers are encouraged to become acquainted with their guests, which helps build repeat business.
The restaurant also has beautifully appointed banquet rooms ideally suited for special events, corporate functions and meetings.  “Banquets are a big part of our business.  There are so many people over the years that have come in for lunch or dinner.  Once they taste our food they usually ask if we do parties.  When they see our facilities, they are amazed.  We book a lot of parties.  We are one of a few banquet facilities in the area.”
Charley’s Other Brother will remain open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.
